Introductions Often we want to share something that we're seeing on our desktop to friends and family over the internet. The quickest way to do this is by taking a desktop screen shot.
Time: 1 - 3 Minutes
Level: Beginner
Using Your Keyboard
The quickest way to take a screen shot is by using keyboard shortcuts. By pressing three buttons simultaneously you can take a screen shot of your whole desktop or just a portion of your desktop. Here are the shortcuts:
Command + Shift + 3: This will take a screen shot of your whole background and automatically save it to your desktop as "Picture 1".
Command + Shift + 4: You will notice that your courser changes into a crosshair. This allows you to select a portion of your desktop. Click and drag over a space then release. A file will automatically save to your desktop called "Picture 1".
Using Your Desktop
There's a neat little program hidden away in the Utilities folder that is a bit more flexible than keyboard. On top of what the keyboard shortcuts allow it also lets you take screen shots of an open window and save the file types to a specific location using the name of your choice.
The program can be found: Macintosh/Applications/Utilities/Grab
Once you launch the application look to the top of your screen for "Capture". There are three options, "Selection", "Window", "Screen", and "Timed".
Once you've selected any of the above and have taken your screen shot just hit Command + S to save it. Hopefully this tutorial has been useful to you! If it has, give it a +1!
